Black gram originated in South Asia where it has been in cultivation from ancient times and is one of the most highly prized pulses It has been domesticated in South Asia from its wild ancestor, Vigna mungo var. silvestris Lukoki, Marechal and Otoul. Its centre of genetic diversity is found is also South Adian region that includes Bangladesh. It has also been introduced to other tropical areas mainly by immigrants from the region. The crop is traditionally cultivated in South Asia and adjacent regions (India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Myanmar).
